[pullquote]It took ten years for Ana Popovic to convince her father Milton to record an album together… [/pullquote]The wildly talented blues guitarist and former American Blues Scene cover girl Ana Popovic is releasing Blue Room, an album she made with her father Milton Popovic, on May 19th. Today, exclusively on ABS, you can get a sneak preview of the hotly anticipated new material with “Catfish Blues” — a traditional blues song with a ton of history.
Blue Room is an album that comes very close to home for Ana. When she was growing up, her family’s apartment in Belgrade was unlike other Serbian homes. It was within that 11th floor flat that an enclave called “the blue room” was the place where blues and rock albums were played and discussed, and music was pursued. It was where a father inspired his daughter to take up the guitar and to unlock the blues feeling within her.
“I wanted to record the songs that we used to play together while I was still living at home,” Ana says about the many deep blues cuts on the album. While her father had never pursued a career in music, Ana has since become an international touring sensation. Popovic, widely recognized as a brilliant guitarist and the only woman to participate in the most recent edition of the all star Experience Hendrix Tour, says her father “really made me love the instrument.”
“In the beginning the blues grabbed me,” says Milton, “with feelings expressed by artists like Arthur Big Boy Crudup, George Smith, Magic Sam, Sunnyland Slim and Lightnin’ Hopkins.” Milton, a lifelong blues player and lover, taught himself to speak English from old blues albums. His fascinating story will be in the upcoming August issue of American Blues Scene Mag.
Blue Room will be released on artisteXclusive Records May 19th and produced by legend Jim Gaines, who produced everything from Stevie Ray Vaughan and Luther Allison to John Lee Hooker!
