“In the depth of winter I finally learned that there was in me an invincible summer.” – Albert Camus
The best cure for cold weather is hot blues. That’s why Buddy Guy’s Legends is announcing its first annual Winter Blues Fest. From December 1st through 6th, we’re packing our schedule day and night with live music, bringing you a straight week of the best acoustic and electric blues Chicago has to offer – and if you don’t live in Chicago, we’re streaming it live on the internet.
“Chicago has too much talent for just one Blues Fest,” says Mark Maddox, the talent buyer here at Buddy Guy’s. And it’s true: the Winter Blues Fest features a diverse range of talented artists. The lineup includes old-school bluesmen Vino Louden, former bandleader for Koko Taylor, and Eddie Shaw, who played with Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf; young gun guitar slingers Eric Davis, Mike Wheeler, Toronzo Cannon, and rising star Kirsten Thien; local favorites Mississippi Heat, described by the Sun-Times was “quite simply the hottest band in Chicago”; imported Aussie bluesman Michael Charles; and the new wave of artists obsessed by the traditional blues sound, such as The Cashbox Kings.
Additionally there will be a whole series of free acoustic performances. Those include slide player Matt Hendricks, former winner of the Chicago Blues Challenge; Eric Noden, who has played at blues festivals all over the world (including the Chicago Blues Fest); award winning blues historian Fruteland Jackson; and Eddie Taylor Jr, son of the great Eddie Taylor and heir to his clean classic sound.
