Personally, I’ve traveled to the delta many times and spent hours, more than one time literally, at the feet of this blues giant. His presence will be deeply missed in bluesland.
The great Hill Country bluesman Robert “Wolfman” Belfour has passed away, leaving a legacy of astounding, raw Mississippi blues and a legion of fans who’ve made the blues pilgrimage for years to hear Belfour play in the delta.
The Commercial Appeal’s obituary described Belfour as being born a few miles south of Holly Springs, Mississippi, coming up in the hothouse atmosphere of the Hill Country blues, where his neighbors and friends included giants of the genre such as Otha Turner, Syd Hemphill, R.L. Burnside, and Junior Kimbrough.
Wolfman was a staple in the Clarksdale, Mississippi area. After a decades-long break from music, Belfour began playing again in the Memphis area before releasing two albums through Fat Possum Records
Mr. Belfour’s funeral expenses were generously paid by The Blues Foundation’s HART Fund. The HART Fund helps blues musicians and their families with funeral and medical expenses. The Blues Foundation also offers free health screenings during the Blues Music Awards and International Blues Challenge.
