On Thursday, April 13, the Sol Roots Band with guest Pat “Mother Blues” Cohen will perform for a special concert of funk, blues, and soul at the legendary JV’s Music Room located in Northern Virginia.
Hailed as a fierce guitarist and soulful vocalist, Sol Roots has toured around the world with many musical legends. His monthly residency concerts at the legendary JV’s Music Room in Northern Virginia feature an array of special guest appearances of world-class performers. For the month of April, the special guest will be the dynamic vocalist Pat “Mother Blues” Cohen.
For years, Pat “Mother Blues” Cohen sang in New Orleans six nights a week, performing at a wide array of venues including the House of Blues, until Hurricane Katrina destroyed her home. While working in New Orleans, Pat Cohen was known as the “Queen of Bourbon Street.” She relocated to North Carolina, and began touring with the Music Maker Blues Revue. Pat has been featured in Rolling Stone, on PBS News Hour, and more.
The Spady Cultural Museum says that “…’Mother Blues’ is a true blues singer, telling stories through lyric and song, of pain, perseverance, struggle, passion and joy.” Pat Cohen shares the mettle, pathos and ocean-deep compassion of the blues singers she idolizes such as Billie Holiday, Koko Taylor and Etta James. Despite losing her home twice, she keeps taking her talent and heart to the world.
The Sol Roots band delivers electrifying performances of raw funk, deep blues, energetic rock, greasy soul, and hypnotic rhythms. Sol has been a featured performer for events such as Cognac Jazz Festival (France), Floydfest, Shakori Hills, Congressional Blues Festival, The Kennedy Center, Silver Spring Blues Festival, and will be an act for the upcoming Central Virginia Blues Festival in June 2023.
The Roanoke Times declares “Sol Roots has a wealth of original music and a killer approach to guitar playing. No wonder, since he spent years working with Music Maker Foundation backing up the likes of Guitar Gabriel, Cool John Ferguson, Captain Luke, Beverly ‘Guitar’ Watkins, Albert White, Cootie Stark, Robert Lee Coleman, and more.”
Sol Roots and Pat “Mother Blues” Cohen are both Music Maker Foundation artists and have toured around the world. Music Maker Foundation is a non-profit organization that is dedicated “preserving the Soul of American Music” by helping the true pioneers and forgotten heroes of southern musical tradition gain recognition and meet their day-to-day needs.
The legendary JV’s Music Room has showcased the best in national, regional, and local rock, blues, soul, rockabilly bands for decades, and is a fixture in the Washington, D.C. area music scene.
