Celebrated classic rock guitar hero Dan Toler, who played with Gregg Allman, Dickey Betts and Great Southern and The Allman Brothers, has passed away after a battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.
Toler, born in Connersville, Indiana, achieved popularity in the 1970s while a member of Great Southern. Betts eventually became a member of The Allman Brothers Band, and in the late 1970s, Toler came on to play guitar, appearing on tour and albums until 1982. During the mid 1980s, Toler and his brother played with Gregg Allman’s band, including Allman’s hit album I’m No Angel, which earned a gold record.
Most recently, Dan, along with his brother and Johnny Townsend, re-formed the Toler/Townsend Band after a stint with a revived Great Southern band. He continued to play with many of the greatest southern rock bands in existence. In 2009, the Toler/Townsend Band released an album with great european success. Toler’s brother passed away in June of 2011.
