For this new version, in celebration of her hero Mavis Staples’ upcoming 85th birthday, June enlisted another close friend and mentor, Stax soul legend Carla Thomas as well as the talented students at Stax Music Academy.

Charles “Skip” Pitts, the wah-master soul and blues guitarist from Memphis and best known for his work on Isaac Hayes’ track, “Shaft” and the Isley Brothers’ “It’s Your Thing”, has passed away.

Stax Records created a mecca of Soul Music in Memphis that acted as an anthem for an entire generation. Now, nearly 50 years later, Stax is again manufacturing great music through a world-renown school.
